When I heard about a new cottage cheese product that GayLea was releasing, I was instantly intrigued. I am a huge fan of cottage cheese (growing up, we used to have it mixed with fruit salad for dessert, which may seem a little odd, but trust me, it’s delicious) but my kids are really iffy on the texture. They won’t even eat yogurt that has “chunks” in it. So when I heard of the new smooth cottage cheese, I thought, “Hey, maybe they’ll be into this”.
I like yogurt and all, but cottage cheese has 25% more protein than even the leading greek yogurt, plus it’s a great source of calcium – and what kid couldn’t use more protein and calcium? I grabbed the two flavours that my grocery store carried (vanilla bean and salted caramel – they didn’t carry the lemon, which was a bummer, because my kids favorite flavor of anything is always lemon) and decided to give it a shot.
The way I disguised them first was by creating “ice cream” sandwiches for dessert – I used a thin cookie and spread a thick layer of the smooth cottage cheese (in vanilla) between two cookies. I froze them for three hours, and then let my kids and husband try them. My husband is camera shy, but I taped my daughters reaction, which you can see below.
They all couldn’t believe that it was cottage cheese. They could tell it wasn’t ice cream but they swore it was some type of yogurt – greek yogurt was the most popular guess. Since then, my daughter has been devouring them – we’ve eaten six packs in the past month. The most popular use? Dessert! We only have dessert on the weekends, but instead of grabbing a cookie from the freezer, my oldest daughter grabbed the salted caramel cottage cheese (which, at 100g, is a perfect portion)! Dessert with major health benefits? Score one for mom. My husband even threw it in his morning smoothie – with 10g of protein, it’s equal to half a scoop of protein powder and has the same amount of calories.
But don’t take my word for it – go grab some for yourself and give it a try. Gay Lea’s Nordica Smooth Cottage Cheese is available at most major grocery stores in Ontario – and if you find them lemon one, let me know. I’m pretty sure my kids would send you their tooth fairy money to ship it here 🙂
