Earlier this month, we held my daughters 7th birthday party, and there was no questioning what the theme would be. She was in full on unicorn mode. So when I saw this holographic vinyl that Cricut just released, I knew I had to incorporate it into the party somehow. What I ended up creating was…
…holographic vinyl bubble wands!
I absolutely adore the way these turned out. You know when you have a project idea in your head that turns out even better than you imagined? This was one of those projects. I’m in love.
To make your own, you’ll need:
- holographic vinyl from Cricut
- transfer tape
- bubble wands
- Cricut Explore
- Cricut tools (weeder and scraper)
The first thing to do is create your design in Design Space. (Psst – there’s a new beta version of DS. You need to use it – it’s so much quicker and easier than the current version.)
How to Make Holographic Vinyl Bubble Wands
I uploaded the unicorn design that I was using for the rest of the party (the set is called Unicorn Poo and it’s by Jessica Sawyer), and duplicated it five times, sized each one to a different size, and duplicated each of them a ton of times. I did the same with a star and a heart (from basic shapes), and a rainbow that I found in the Cricut Design Library.
Then, I created a box that was the size of my bubble wand (about 9×3.5 inches) and filled it up with my various shapes and sizes. Some I had to size a little as I went. I only filled about half of the box, then attached them, and copied and pasted to the bottom half.
I also did some with names and a little unicorn as well.
Cutting Holographic Vinyl
Once I had created all of my designs, I hit the make button and away it went. It was mesmerizing watching the vinyl reflect and change colors as it moved in and out of the machine!
After the cutting came the fun part. Weeding. (Hey Cricut, where are we on that self weeding machine?) It actually wasn’t as bad as I expected though, because the vinyl had cut so nicely. Even the tiniest shapes came apart easily.
Transfer tape was a must for this project! I placed the middle of my design on the wand first and then smoothed one side of it onto the bubble wand. I pulled back the transfer tape a bit on that side, in case the second side overlapped any – I didnt want it to overlap onto the transfer tape.
Peel off the transfer tape and you’re done. Pretty simple right? This holographic vinyl is amazing – and so on trend! It goes perfect with a unicorn party, and comes in three colors. I used the opal, but you can also get pink and blue.
Now I am trying to think of all of the places that are begging for holographic vinyl… I think my craft room is the first place I’ll attack. What about you? How would you use this awesome vinyl?
