Felt Leaf & Pom-Pom Garland

One of the things I knew I wanted to incorporate into my fall vignette was a leaf garland. Since I was using non traditional colors, I knew I wouldn’t be able to make it out real leaves, or even fake floral leaves (unless of course, I spray painted them, which didn’t look good in my mind).  I wanted them to match my fall framed artwork, which reminded me of my felt stash.  I decided to go with felt leaves and place a felt ball in between each leaf.

To make the garland, I gathered some supplies – all of which I didn’t use.  You will need felt in colors of your choosing, some sort of string (I ended up using plain bakers twine, but wool, embroidery thread, or even fishing line would work), and pom poms.  You will also need a template (search google images for one, or freehand one as I did – I folded a piece of paper in half, drew half of a leaf shape, cut it out and unfolded it for a perfectly symmetrical leaf), scissors, and a needle.
Using your template, trace the shape onto the felt.  I made 6 cream colored leaves and 3 each of purple, green, teal, and pale orange.  I just used a regular ball point pen to trace them.
Lay them out with the pom-poms to create your desired pattern so they are easy to string together.
Thread your needle with your choice of string and push it through a pom-pom, and then weave it through the leaf to create a “vein”.  My needle wasn’t super long, so I bunched it a little and straightened it out once it was threaded.
Continue threading your pom-poms and leaves until you have your strand to the desired length.  I placed 9 leaves on two strings, since I wanted to swag them.  Then you hang them wherever you like – I hung mine on my mirror, making it virtually impossible to get a decent shot, but here it is with the rest of my fall vignette that I shared on Monday.  Hope you enjoyed!
