In case you missed it in January, I shared this grocery shopping checklist with the crew over at Organize & Decorate Everything!
I use this printable to help organize my pantry and grocery shopping trips. I first developed this “system” in 2010, when I went back to work just after having my second daughter. I hated planning my meals and then scanning my pantry (which consists of a small space upstairs and more space in the basement) just to see if I was out of something. Then I would go to the store, with my list for meals and realize I forgot to right down if we were out of the kids cereal or granola bars. It just felt so chaotic. Then, I watched a cooking show with Michael Smith, who said he keeps a running list inside his pantry of what he needs. Everytime he finishes something, he adds it to the list – then when he heads to the store, he knows exactly what to get.
I noticed that I was continuously adding the same staple items to my list fairly regularly – things like chicken breast, crackers, and apples – things I never wanted to run out of. So when I sat down to create a printable list, I typed those items in, and left several blank lines as well for the items I buy less frequently. The one you download will be blank so you can fully customize it yourself, but here’s an idea of how it will look:
Here’s how it works in my house:
I tape my printable shopping list inside the door of my pantry cupboard. I place a pen on the top shelf inside the pantry so it’s always handy when I need it. When I run out of bananas, I simply check the box. When I run out of vanilla, I write it on a blank line. Since I only need to replace my vanilla once a year, if that, it doesn’t get a permanent spot on my list. Then when I meal plan, I make a little note of what we will be eating on the list, write in or check off any additional items I will need (that I may not usually stock), and take my list to the store with me. When I get home from grocery shopping, I tape a new list to the inside of the pantry.
You can quickly customize your list to include your regular purchases. Trust me, it’s easy peasy! If you want all of the details – head over to Organize & Decorate Everything and read the entire How-To.
I hope this helps organize you! I know it has really saved me a bunch of time (and money – I can’t tell you how many times I brought home a bag of mini cucumbers for my kids, when there were still some in the fridge… overbuying fresh produce REALLY sucks!) Enjoy!
