DIY Headboard Ideas and Inspiration: Upholstered or Wood Plank?

Over Christmas, we put new floors in my daughters room, and this summer, we are going to replace our hideous carpet with some pretty new floors too.  While we’re at it, we are going to update our sad and dreary looking bedroom.  One of the items on the list is to get a headboard, so I’ve been collecting DIY Headboard Ideas and I’m kind of conflicted on what style I want.

Here is my room inspiration – my favorite room design of any I have seen.  I don’t want to recreate this room piece by piece, but I want that overall elegant and romantic but not too feminine design.

(I have searched everywhere for the original source for this image and I can’t – I even did a reverse search by image.  If you know it’s origin, please let me know!)
We have a solid wood sleigh headboard that is a family piece, and as much as it breaks my heart to do so, it’s time to change it out.  It’s just not our style.  What is our style?  Here’s where I’m stuck.  I have two styles I am in love with, and I’m hoping you can help me choose!

(1) Upholstered Headboard with Nailhead Trim

I love the clean simple lines of this headboard.  It has that effortless elegance that I love.
I love the color of this one!  The turquoise goes great with the brass trim!
This one is made from a drop cloth!
Love the fabric colour of this one too!

(2) Wooden-Plank Style Headboard

I love the rustic feel of a wooden headboard like this.
The small shelf on top of this headboard is adorable!

(Lovely Crafty Home)

Isn’t this adorable?
I love that this headboard is all new wood, but made to look old!

So, what do you think – upholstered or plank style?  It’s just so hard to choose, I wish I could have them both!

  1. Ohhh.. do I have to choose just one? I love them all! :)

  2. I’ve got it! Do a plank wall with an upholstered headboard.;) I’m thinking since your favorite room has the upholstered, go for that one. It’s classic and never goes out of style. You can add a wood/rustic element otherwise. The teal one is my favorite, but I tend to be practical and would go for neutral so you can change out pillows whenever you want a new look. can’t wait to see what you do!

  3. You’ve got some fabulous inspiration here Sarah. I love the look of a wood plank headboard but all of these are great!

  4. Even though I adore the wood plank, I would probably go with the upholstered look…it is just so clean and classic to me. I have no doubt with your style whatever you choose will turn out fantastic!

  5. Great idea! Btw – that first one is from Cathy Mortenson who blogs with HomeGoods. Here are more photo’s of how she put the room together:

  6. I have a wooden one. We built it using plans from Ana White and I love it. My favourite part is that I’ve painted it several times to match my decor.

  7. I want an upholstered headboard like the one from Welcome to Heardmont, these are great inspiration pictures, thanks for sharing.

  8. Great round up! They are all lovely but I love the one from Lovely Crafty Home. Looking forward to seeing what you do!:)

  9. I love all of them! Great round up of ideas friend :o)

  10. I am currently debating this question for our bedroom. I love the look of both and just can’t decide!! I can’t wait to see which you choose.

  11. Hi I love the wood headboard…. Beautiful!! I’m also wondering where you got your pretty pillow cases?

    • Hi heather – click the link for each headboard and you will go to the site where you can find more info or contact the person who did the project. Thanks!

  12. Hello Sarah,
I’m the designer of the gray and gold room at the top of your page. It was originally posted to the HomeGoods blog Design Happy a few years ago. I’m glad you like the room. It was for a client of mine and has been reposted many times. Let me know if you need any more information on it. Cathy Mortensen

  13. I love the wooden ones… especially the one with the shelf !
