As a mom and an educator, I am always on the lookout for great toys that allow my children to play in a creative, open ended manner. Last month, I heard about this new building product called Bunchems. Since blocks and other building toys are some of my daughters favorites, I thought this might be a hit with them as well… and my instincts were spot on!
My girls absolutely loved this toy. Bunchems are basically little balls that stick together with these little loops – they remind me a lot of velcro. The little loops hook together to create all kinds of 3D shapes and structures, whatever you can imagine.
They come in a wide range of colors and with accessories that stick into the sides of the little loopy balls. (Important safety note: Make sure you always tie back your child’s hair before playing with this toy because it can become very tangled in hair. The same goes for carpet or really fibrous surfaces – it’s best to play with Bunchems on a hard surface like a table. You can get more details in their safety video.)
At first, they tried to recreate some of the designs on the box, but that didn’t last long at all. Soon, they were creating emojis, rainbows, elephants, and butterflies.
They were obsessed. I didn’t even get to take a picture of it all, because as soon as they would have it built, they tore it down again to make something new.
One of the fun things about the Bunchems Alive set is that it comes with a round blue ball that takes AAA batteries. The colorful “bunchems” then stick all around the ball, and when your product is finished, a switch brings your creation to life. It vibrates and jiggles! The girls thought this was fabulous. Another thing that they loved was the quick clean up – since they all bunch together, it was easy to scoop them into a ball and place them back in the box.
I love it when my kids get excited about a new toy that requires them to be engaged and thinking creatively. There is nothing worse than spending money on a toy and it being tosses aside in a couple of days, or even hours. I find this usually happens to close ended toys (toys that are designed with one end in mind, or that you can only play with in one way). However, with open ended toys, like Bunchems, there are so many new ways to create that it provides endless amounts of entertainment. It’s easy to see why this product won 2016 Toy of the Year!
