Today is Thanksgiving Monday in Canada, which means we have had three glorious days off to celebrate together (which have included two thanksgiving dinners), and today is our last dinner – one we are sharing with our friends. We have these small groups at our church which meet together every second week, and ours decided to incorporate a thanksgiving dinner into our regular meeting. Since all of the kids would be there, I decided to make a cute little treat for them.
While flipping through an issue of Make it Yourself at the bookstore last week, I saw an idea of creating acorns out of plastic Easter eggs and twine. Since it was thanksgiving, I thought it would be cute to put a little slip of paper inside with a Bible verse about thankfulness. Of course, I also slipped some treats inside! How could I resist?
To make your own Acorn Fortune Eggs, you will need…
- plastic Easter eggs
- twine
- glue gun and glue sticks
- small treats
- Bible verses or fortunes
To start, fold over the end of your twine and use hot glue to stick it together. This will be the stem of your acorn.
Place a dab of glue on the top of the wide end of the egg, and start wrapping the twine around the stem, gluing as you go.
Stop wrapping when you reach the part where the egg cracks in two.
Cut up your Bible verses or fortunes. Place one verse in each egg.
Now it’s time to start putting in your treats! I put five jelly beans and five gumballs in each egg along with the verse.
When they are cracked open, they are just like a fortune cookie – but with a little extra yummies!
I made a dozen of these for the kids who are coming to the dinner, and it was such a quick and easy treat to whip up! I think the kids will love them, and the Bible verse adds a nice little reminder to be thankful this season.

What an adorable idea for any occasion. Great job, love how you added the bible verses and some munchies. Really nice of you to make things for the kids. Maybe the adults will want one also, I sure would. Happy days ahead.

What a cool idea! We attend a small group with our family on Sunday evenings. All the families eat together then the kids play upstairs while the adults do our Bible study down stairs. This would be a fun way to serve dessert to the kiddos on my dinner night. I love the idea of putting their Sunday school memory verse inside, too! Thanks for the fabulous idea! I’m pinning this one!
