It seems I have been posting a lot of quick and easy projects lately, which is a testament to the amount of time I have had available for crafting. Between work and family life, I have barely had a chance to create! However, you always have time to create a simple project like this Duck Tape® Necklace.
If you haven’t seen the amazing selection of Duck Tape® out there by now, you must surely be living under a rock. For instance, look at the cool selection I found at WalMart:
If you can’t find it at your WalMart, you might be looking in the wrong spot – I assumed it would be near the crafty things, but it was actually down by the photo hanging hardware, you know where the paint section is? That’s where you’ll find it! These were some of the ones I found hilarious – love the bacon and flying pigs ones!
And of course, who doesn’t need some Justin Bieber tape, right? In the end, my daughters got the final choice, and we went with some aqua and purple animal prints and a black solid.
My oldest daughter is totally into the “hip” scene – neon, mustaches, hi-tops… seriously… it brings me back to early childhood. (After buying the Duck tape, she asked me to buy her a neon blouse with the shoulders cut out. I flatly refused.) So I whipped up this cute necklace for her using some of the tape.
To create your own Duck Tape® Necklace (in 5 minutes!), you’ll only need a few supplies:
- Duck Tape® in your favorite prints
- hoop rings (avialable in the jewelry section at WalMart or a craft store)
- chain
- scissors
Start by pulling off a few inches of Duck Tape®, and doubling it over on itself. I folded it in half and cut out one side of a mustache, so that my sides were even.
Then, I used a different tape and created a mini bow. (When I got home, I discovered I already had a mini roll of the aqua animal print from when I met up with The Duck Brand people and Snap. I used it up first, solely because it was open, but it would be easy enough to cut down a regular sized roll.) To do this, I cut a thin strip of tape, and then folded it in half. I bunched it together in the middle, and then cut another itty bitty piece to wrap around the middle of the bow.
Using a needle, poke a hole in both of your pendants, and slip them onto the hoop ring. Place the hoop ring on your necklace and close the ring.
All that’s left to do now is find a cute model to wear it! My daughter gladly filled that role, and was immediately planning the next necklace she could make – and I love that she can do it herself now! It’s such a great craft medium for kids, and it’s not very messy at all (my kinda craft for kids!)
